Your garden is absolutely the most beautiful oasis of calm, where you especially spend a large part of your free time during the summer months. To enjoy the time spent in the garden, you need to devote a little time to both ornamental and vegetable beds. Besides the beds, it is also necessary to take care of the lawn, which is only nice when it is fresh and green. How do you keep the lawn in constant condition? Take a look at these useful tips.
Mowing is the foundation
Mulching and mowing the grass are the basics for the premise of a beautiful lawn. If you want to mow without a catcher, the grass should not be higher than two inches. Grass cut this short and left on the ground provides the lawn with enough mulching and fertilizing material. It retains moisture and supplies the lawn with the necessary nutrients.
However, if you mow the grass much taller, leaving the clippings is unsuitable. Longer cut grass will smother the lawn, block the flow of air and cause matting. It also prevents moisture from reaching the grass roots. Therefore, in such a case it is recommended to use a mower with a catcher for the clippings.
You can throw excess grass onto the compost; it works great as a base for fertilizer.
Don’t forget adequate moisture
Especially on hot summer days it is very important to water the grass. So if it hasn’t rained for several days, sprinkle the lawn with water in the evening hours to prevent rapid evaporation. The lawn will then absorb enough moisture for its growth and greening.
For clay soil up to forty millimetres of water is recommended on each patch of ground, while for well-aerated soil twenty millimetres of water is sufficient. The recommended watering frequency is every fifth day.
It is also important to replenish nutrients for the lawn. If you do not leave the cut grass on the lawn, it is necessary to add another type of fertilizer. In garden centres you can find specialized lawn fertilizer, which should be applied around mid-summer. Don’t forget thorough and even distribution of the fertilizer; it is not recommended to exceed the dose.
Beware of treacherous pests
The main pests that can worsen the condition of an otherwise beautifully green lawn are primarily weeds and moss. In specialized stores there are nowadays a range of herbicides and sprays that act destructively on weeds, not on the lawn. If you follow the exact instructions for use, you will easily and quickly get rid of all weeds.
