Do you want to expand your garden with more beautiful and fragrant roses? Then let their cuttings root in a plastic bottle filled with sand. In the next phase you only need a bit of patience. Also, don’t forget to water the plants regularly.
How to proceed when planting rose cuttings in sand?
Before you start, you need to get fine sand, a sharp knife and also a large PET bottle with a capacity of at least three to five liters. Then proceed according to these tips:
- Rose cuttings should be at least twenty centimeters long.
- Remove all leaves from the lower part of the stems. Leave about two to three on the upper part.
- Take a sharp knife and cut the rose stem diagonally at the bottom.
- You also need PET bottles, into the bottoms of which make several holes using a soldering iron or a knife. These will serve to drain excess liquid.
- Then fill the plastic containers with fine sand (about halfway) and insert the rose cuttings into it. A five-liter bottle can hold four stems. You insert the plants into the containers through the neck.
- Pour water (standing or rainwater) into the sand up to the neck of the bottle, then screw the caps on the containers and place them in a warm, sunny spot (but not in direct sunlight). The stems should root within a few weeks, provided all suitable conditions are met.
- Once the roses are fully rooted, remove them from the sand and plant them in a permanent spot in the garden.
How to care for roses in the garden?
However, the process does not end the moment you plant your roses in the garden. You need to care for them properly so they grow beautifully and bloom. Here are a few tips:
- First of all, provide the roses with enough necessary nutrients in the form of fertilizers. Use special products that are intended for fertilizing roses. The garden center will surely advise you on their use. You can also find instructions on the product packaging. The first dose should be given to the plants in March and the second in June.
- Also focus on regularly removing weeds around the roses. They can drain energy from the plants. It’s also advisable to pick off dry and rotting leaves from the roses.
