Onion and garlic are the foundation of Czech cuisine, and they also play the main role in the recipe for a delicious garlic soup that will fill you up while providing the body with the necessary vitamins and antioxidants to support the immune system. Garlic is also a wonder for the heart and the cardiovascular system, and no less for digestion, because it helps eliminate harmful intestinal bacteria and fungi. Our grandmothers already knew that garlic soup is the best homemade remedy for all ailments, so prepare it even if everyone around you will know what you had for lunch!
Ingredients
What will you need to prepare a delicious, hearty garlic soup? Prepare:
- strong broth – 750-1000 ml
- butter – 1 tablespoon
- garlic – 8 cloves
- potatoes – 3 pcs
- onion – 1 piece
- marjoram – 1 tablespoon
- caraway – 1 tablespoon
- salt – to taste
- pepper – to taste
For seasoning:
- croutons – to taste
- Gouda cheese – to taste
Preparation
Prepare a sufficiently deep pot in which sauté the finely chopped onion you prepared earlier in a tablespoon of butter (you can use lard). Meanwhile, peel the potatoes and after the onion has turned pink add them, diced, into the pot. Sprinkle a tablespoon of whole caraway seeds and let them lightly fry so the spice can release its aroma.
Pour the mixture in the pot with strong broth and cook until the potatoes are tender. You can check if the potatoes are properly cooked with a fork.
While the potatoes are cooking, peel and press the garlic and wait with adding it to the soup until the potatoes are almost done. That way the soup will have more bite. At the end add the marjoram, season with salt and pepper, and finish cooking. Serve the soup hot in bowls garnished with croutons and grated cheese.
The soup can be a main course if you thicken it with a beaten egg and serve it together with a toasted baguette or sliced fresh bread. You can also flavor it with freshly chopped chives.
