Although hemorrhoids are not fatal, they are among very painful and bothersome conditions that arise from abnormal dilation of veins or from venous inflammation of the rectum. Hemorrhoids are accompanied by unpleasant itching, bleeding during bowel movements and intense pain during prolonged standing or, conversely, sitting. If hemorrhoidal nodules enlarge, a doctor may recommend a minimally invasive procedure to remove them. For initial troubles, pain and discomfort can be alleviated with common home remedies.
What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are inflamed veins in the rectum that are accompanied by swelling. The veins of the rectum help nourish the tissues around the anal opening and contribute to the function of the sphincters and the evacuation of stool. As a result of straining or increased pressure, the veins can dilate and form nodules inside the rectum — these hemorrhoids are called internal — or they can protrude outward; such ones are referred to as external.
Risk factors for developing hemorrhoids
What leads to the dilation of vessels in the rectal area and the formation of hemorrhoids? According to experts, the key risk factors are family history, overweight or obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, a diet containing too many spices and substances that cause inflammation of the intestinal and rectal mucosa. Hemorrhoids can develop due to intense physical exertion, during sports and when cycling or horseback riding. They often protrude during pregnancy or after childbirth, with digestive problems, persistent diarrhea and constipation, due to excessive alcohol consumption or frequent dehydration of the body.
How to recognize hemorrhoids?
Nodular dilation of veins in the rectal area is common; it troubles every second person in their lifetime. With internal hemorrhoids there is bleeding when wiping with toilet paper or blood may appear on underwear. Occasionally a mucous discharge or fecal incontinence occurs. In contrast, external hemorrhoids are typically associated with itching and burning; painful nodules may have a purplish color and there is a risk of infection if they rupture.
Home remedy for hemorrhoids
For the above-mentioned troubles you can easily make a medicinal preparation at home, for which you will need:
- 250 ml wheat germ oil,
- 10 g dried chamomile,
- petals from 2 roses,
- 20 g lanolin,
- 20 g organic honey.
Put all the ingredients except the honey into a pot, heat for several minutes, then let cool and strain through a cloth. Then add the honey and mix the blend, pour into an ice tray and place in the freezer. In case of pain apply a cube to the affected area and leave it on until you feel relief. Apply the cubes several times a day for one week to allow the hemorrhoids to heal.
Effects of the medicinal ingredients
- Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and soothing effects, helps reduce inflammation, stops bleeding and effectively heals the affected mucous membranes.
- Wheat germ oil can be purchased in specialized stores, contains vitamin E and has strong antioxidant effects, it helps with the absorption of clots.
- Lanolin is a purified fat from sheep’s wool; this yellowish substance has properties similar to human sebum, therefore it softens, soothes and regenerates damaged rectal and anal mucosa. It protects against irritation and helps moisturize the area.
- Honey has strong anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects, can heal wounds and with hemorrhoids helps reduce the resulting inflammation, aids in restoring the anal mucosa and speeds up healing.
- Cold acts as an anesthetic and analgesic, helps reduce swelling and effectively decreases acute pain.
