My husband admitted to me that he smelled an odor coming from my ears. I felt embarrassed, but it was probably caused by the earring holes.

Maybe you have already noticed that the back of your earrings can smell unpleasant. Especially if you wear the same pair of earrings for a longer time. It’s not, of course, a tragedy, but you can do something about it. Either way, it’s good to know what causes it and how to remove this unpleasantness. Brown dirt can quickly build up behind the ears, which causes this unpleasant odor. What is this dirt made of and how can you effectively get rid of it?

What exactly causes it?

Dead epithelial cells, skin oil, dirt from hair and everyday dust accumulate behind the ears every day. If you don’t take care to remove this grime regularly, it will turn into a greenish-brown mass and can even discolor the earrings. If the skin is prone to oiliness, the dirt will accumulate even more easily and quickly. Therefore you need to know how to fight it and get rid of the grime that otherwise after some time will become very unpleasant.

How to get rid of the grime?

First of all, you should of course remove the dirty earrings. You need to air out the area behind the ear. You might also consider earrings that allow the skin to breathe better. Now thoroughly wash the area behind the ear and the earlobe itself. Use a cotton swab around the earring hole so you can reach it well without irritating the skin. You can clean it simply with water, water and soap, or the cream you usually use. It’s up to you.

The last step is not surprising at all. You must thoroughly clean the earrings. Rub them with a paste made from a combination of baking soda, vinegar and water. If you cannot clean them perfectly, replace the old earrings with new ones. If you don’t want to regularly part with your favorite earrings, perform this process regularly and fairly often. Only then will you preserve your jewelry and avoid having to deal with the unpleasant smell and accumulated grime behind the ears.
