Doctor warns: “You should not pee while showering”

For many, peeing while showering may have become a habit, but the doctor warns that it can cause a serious problem.

Dr. Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas, in a video for TikTok, explained why peeing in the shower can cause your brain to think that you need to pee every time you are in running water, that you should pee every time you’re around it.

The problem it can cause

As the doctor explains, it can lead to small urine leaks when you least expect it, and it can happen when you’re at work near a dishwasher that drains water, or even when you drive past a car wash.

Dr. Jeffrey-Thomas referred to the “Pavlov’s dog” experiment: “He rings a bell every time he gives the dog food, so the dog eventually starts to associate the bell and begins to salivate. Even when there is no food.”

The doctor says: “If you pee in the shower or you turn on the tap or shower and sit on the toilet to urinate while the water is running, you create an association in your brain between the sound of running water and the need to pee.”

Explanation

Dr. Jeffery-Thomas, who works in urology in Greater Boston, drew a bladder on a piece of paper to explain it.

She drew three lines that represented “three levels of the feeling of fullness”.

When there is a little urine in the bladder, at the lowest level, “it tells you that there is some urine in the bladder”.

The second, middle level, tells you to “make a plan for going to the toilet”.

The third level, the “panic button”, represents the situation when your bladder is full, and it tells your brain to urgently use the toilet.
