Some stories we read with bated breath. This beautiful story is an example of that. We don’t know if it really happened, but it’s worth reading. We decided to share it with you.

What happened

“I wanted to adopt a dog from a shelter. I liked a Labrador named Reggie. I immediately knew he was the dog for me. It’s true that the beginnings weren’t easy. I didn’t know how to reach Reggie. When I was looking through the “adoption” papers, I found a letter addressed to the new owner. Before I opened the letter, I said to Reggie – maybe your owner has some advice for us?”

To the new owner of my dog:

I’m not exactly thrilled that you are reading this letter. It means Reggie has a new owner and I can no longer be with her. Allow me to tell you a few things about this wonderful Labrador. It will help you build a better relationship with this amazing dog.

First of all – Reggie loves tennis balls. The more, the better! She usually holds 2 balls in her mouth at once. She tried to take a third too, but so far she hasn’t managed it. No matter where you throw the ball, Reggie will run after it like crazy, so be careful on the street. You don’t want a tragedy to happen!

Reggie knows basic commands such as sit, stay, and heel. She’s walked 2x a day – at 6 AM and at 6 PM. She’s vaccinated, but she hates going to the vet.

Finally, I’d like to ask you to give her (a) little time to get used to you. For many years it was just the two of us. I’d like to reveal a secret. Her name is not Reggie. I don’t know why I wrote that name at the shelter. If you are reading this letter, you should (a) know his real name – Tank.

Why the name Tank

I call him that because I drove a tank in the war. The only thing I wished for was that Tank would have a home while I was on a mission in Iraq. For 6 years this dog was my only family. I served in the army for the same length of time. I hope that now he will be family for you and that he will love you the same way he loved me.

If I have to leave Tank to protect our homeland from terrorism – so be it. I hope Tank will be proud of me and that he will understand. He is a very smart dog.

The new owner’s reaction

I put the letter back in the envelope. Of course I had heard about the man. He was a war hero and received a posthumous decoration a few months ago. Then I looked at my dog. “Hey Tank,” I said calmly and the dog lifted his head and wagged his tail.”

“Heel, pup!” Tank ran to me immediately and licked my face. “Do you want to play with the ball?”

The dog ran out of the room and after a while came to me with 3 tennis balls in his mouth …
