You can also notice the difference practically – when you insert a sheet of paper between the frame and the sash and close the window. In winter mode the paper will be very difficult to pull out, while in summer mode it will be easier.
Steps to set windows to winter mode
- Find the eccentrics (pins) around the perimeter of the window sash – they are usually in the metal part of the fittings.
- Use an Allen key or pliers – it depends on the type of your hardware.
- Rotate each pin inward toward the frame – this will increase the pressure.
- Check the seal – try the paper test to make sure the window sits correctly.
- Don’t forget spring – after winter it’s necessary to switch back to summer mode so the sealing doesn’t wear out unnecessarily.
The whole process takes only a few minutes and can be done by a layperson.
Maintenance of plastic windows: prevention pays off
Setting the mode is only one part of caring for plastic windows. If you want them to last many years in good condition, you should regularly perform these steps as well:
- Lubricate the hardware – once a year use silicone oil or a special lubricant.
- Check the seals – wipe the rubber with a damp cloth and treat it with glycerin so it doesn’t crack.
- Clean the drainage channels – this prevents water retention and the formation of mold.
- Regular ventilation – even perfectly sealing windows require plenty of fresh air indoors.
