Every woman in the household occasionally faces unsightly stains on taps, a coating on the kettle or deposits in the toilet bowl, and we’d rather not even mention limescale in the washing machine. But how do you get rid of it? These proven tricks will help you.
Stains on the faucet
Most metals can cope without the ubiquitous limescale that settles in the bathroom wherever it can. But remember how grandma cleaned limescale with a solution of vinegar or baking soda and cleaned things with lemon. Just rub the area with one of these, let it sit — the more encrusted the surface, the longer — and then rinse. But be careful! For instance, shiny chrome-plated fixtures can be damaged.
In the kettle
A grey film on the walls and bottom of the kettle doesn’t look attractive. However, it’s unnecessary to buy special powders and tablets to remove it. Just boil water with a deciliter of vinegar or a tablespoon of citric acid and then let it “stand” for a while (at least an hour, but easily overnight) (for heavier deposits the procedure should be repeated). The limescale will loosen and then disintegrate. Then rinse the kettle several times with hot water. By mechanically stirring the contents of the kettle, the limescale will loosen and dissolve from the kettle walls and spout.
In the washing machine
For the washing machine to work properly, it’s best to remove limescale regularly. One option is to pour 0.5 liters of vinegar into the drum once a month and run a 90 °C cycle. Another method is to add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to the rinse dispenser with every wash. The laundry will not smell of vinegar; vinegar acts preventively against scale formation and also has disinfecting effects.
In the toilet bowl
Frequent flushing, especially when the water is hard, creates brown deposits in the toilet bowl that look very unsightly. It’s enough to pour kitchen vinegar (a whole liter) into the toilet before leaving for work and leave it there all day. After returning home, just scrub the toilet thoroughly with a toilet brush. If the bowl is really clogged, a salt solution will help. Just pour it into the bowl, let it act for a while, and then scrub the toilet thoroughly with a brush.
