Human joints contain only a small amount of water, which is necessary for them to function as we need in our pain-free life. If water is present in the knee and around it in a limited amount, we usually don’t even notice it.
Water in the knee
An increased amount of water, however, can limit the knee’s functions and cause various painful symptoms.
Most often this health problem occurs with injuries and damage to ligaments or tendons in the knee area. Other factors include overloading the knees during sports or work.
Damaged tissues then lead to the accumulation of fluids, which is also known by the folk term “water in the knee”.
How to get rid of the pain?
If the condition is serious, it is appropriate to consult a specialist. However, if it is a mild condition, you can also try some tips from natural medicine.
Smoking
If you smoke, stop or at least reduce it. Smoking limits the amount of oxygen in the tissues, thereby reducing their ability to regenerate.
Raise your legs
Raise your legs to a higher position. The accumulated fluid will then be drained away from the knee into the body by gravity. It’s enough if you lie down and put 2 pillows under your calves.
Ice
Apply ice packs to the painful area. However, do not keep them on the knee for too long to prevent tissue hypothermia.
Remedy for water in the knee
This is a compress that will significantly reduce pain and help drain accumulated water from the knee.
You will need:
- egg yolk
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- plastic wrap
- bandage and adhesive tape
Procedure
Mix the egg yolk with salt in a bowl and apply this mixture to the knee.
Cover it with plastic wrap and additionally secure everything with a bandage, which you fix with adhesive tape.
Replace the compress with a new one every 2 hours. For one day you will need approximately 5 compresses.
Apply the compresses until the pain and swelling subside.
Conclusion
If there is no improvement within 3 days, seek help from a specialist doctor. It may be a more serious condition that already requires professional care.
