It wasn’t so long ago that eggs were widely condemned because it was believed that consuming them is unhealthy, and that is one of the main reasons why many people suffer from high cholesterol. Fortunately today we know that this is not the case, and eggs have returned to our table and we eat them in many different ways. Popular are soft-boiled, hard-boiled, fried, poached, Benedict, scrambled, scrambled, sunny-side up and omelettes. Today, however, we will focus on a certain part of the egg that is quite overlooked – the eggshell. The latest scientific studies suggest that we should also eat eggshells.
Why should you eat eggshells?
The shell is for most of us only the protection of the egg’s internal contents, and therefore we throw it away. Some people may at best use the shells in the garden and add them to the soil or compost. That’s certainly a shame because shells are very healthy and full of health-promoting substances, especially various minerals. Calcium carbonate is the most widespread component of the shell. Eggshells also contain twenty-seven other elements, such as phosphorus, fluorine, silicon, zinc, magnesium, iron, selenium and copper. Regular consumption of eggshells has been shown to have positive effects, for example on bones and muscles, the immune system and the digestive tract. Women will surely appreciate that eggshells contribute to skin regeneration and improve the quality of hair and nails. Consuming eggshells, last but not least, lowers cholesterol levels.
How are eggshells consumed?
You are probably wondering now how to incorporate eggshells into your diet. It’s enough in powder form, which can be added to other foods or consumed on its own. The recommended daily dose is about half a teaspoon of eggshell powder per day.
How is the powder prepared?
First, the shells need to be thoroughly washed to remove any traces of dirt from outside and inside. Then put water to boil in a pot, and when the water begins to boil, add the shells and boil them in boiling water for about ten minutes. This removes bacteria from the shell. Meanwhile, turn on the oven and preheat it to ninety-five degrees. After removing them from the boiling water, pat the shells slightly dry, place them on a baking tray and transfer to the preheated oven, where they will remain for fifteen minutes. After this time, remove the shells from the oven, let them cool and then grind them into a fine powder using a blender or grinder.
