Since 2002, Crocs rubber shoes have been on the market. 300 million of these shoes have been sold. Their comfort, unfortunately, does not guarantee that they are harmless to the body.
“I don’t care, they’re comfortable”
All arguments regarding this footwear inevitably end with the statement “I don’t care, they’re comfortable”. The authors of this remark blissfully assume that shoes that pamper their feet cannot possibly be bad for the body. However, for moms, toddlers, hospital staff and all people who have completely given up on their appearance, we now have very bad news.
What is it about?
Science has also spoken out against Crocs
“Unfortunately, Crocs shoes are not suitable for all-day wear. These shoes do not sufficiently stabilize the heel. When the heel is unstable, the toes tend to clench, which can lead to tendon inflammation, worsening toe deformities, nail problems, corns, and calluses. The same can happen with flip‑flops or any similar footwear that does not have a reinforced heel,” says Dr. Megan Leahy, a pediatrician at the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute in Chicago, in an interview with the Huffington Post.
And even though classic Crocs have a back strap that protects the heel, there are still fairly significant problems. What are they?
They bend at the arch
As Dr. Alex Kor, president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, states, the most important part of any shoe is the so‑called arch, which is part of the support structure that lies between the heel and the toes and runs under the arch of the foot.
“Patients are more likely to experience foot pain if their shoes bend at the arch. Patients who complain of arch or heel pain often come to my office wearing Crocs,” Kor also told reporters at the Huffington Post. He then described Crocs as a sort of icon of this type of footwear. Crocs are therefore not only clumsy and unsightly, but also potentially dangerous.
