When he photographed her, he told her it was her last night on earth. This is the heart-wrenching story of this woman.
Judy Sharp’s Story
Judy Sharp (61) from Brisbane shared an inspirational story to encourage others. When my husband gave me a bouquet of tulips, my heart clenched.
“Thank you, they are beautiful,” I said and forced a smile.
Mick brought her flowers every Friday for 52 weeks of the year, without missing a single day.
The terrifying side of her husband
You would think it would lift her spirits, but for the rest of the week it terrified her. He began to be jealous over little things. He was controlling and desperately unhappy.
When they had two sons, it was even worse. He was so convinced she was cheating on him that he taped up the front and back doors and checked every morning to see if they had been broken.
The thing that hurt her the most was when he told her she was a bad mother. The boys deserved something better, she thought.
Escape
One time she was sitting on the couch with the boys and Mick was insulting her. Suddenly he grabbed the camera, took a photo of them and told her that it was the last night the boys would remember her.
While he was taking pictures she grabbed him, but his frightened scream stopped her. When he left for work the next morning, she left with the boys.
In that chaos she looked for a house to rent. Tim was severely autistic, so no home would accept him, so this was the only option.
She withdrew money from their account to pay the deposit and a week’s rent. They quickly took a moving van, packed and left.
How are they doing today?
Time passed and Mick didn’t seem to care, but what was happening in that house was terrible, especially for the young boys.
She always showed them how much she loved them and made sure they wouldn’t end up like their father.
“Kindness is the most important thing you can be,” she used to say. She is proud that both grew up to be great and happy gentlemen. Thirty-year-old Sam is a swim coach with Olympic experience and thirty-two-year-old Tim is a successful artist.
She has a great life, a job she loves, and a house with a garden.
Inspiration for others
She wanted to share her story and let those affected know they are not alone.
Every year on the anniversary of their escape they post the story on Facebook. The boys are proud to be able to help other survivors.
A few years ago they found a terrifying photograph Mick had taken and decided to share it with everyone.
It was hard to see their faces, but she wants women to know that domestic violence is NEVER acceptable. No child deserves to grow up in such a horrible environment.
She wants people to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
