Lovage (Libeček lékařský) is a medicinal herb that, thanks to its broad effects, finds a place in natural medicine. Originally from Iran and Afghanistan, it now grows practically all over the world. It is popular not only with proponents of natural healing but also with chefs because of its intense flavor. The most valued property of lovage is its ability to relieve urinary tract inflammations and its diuretic effect, which contributes to cleansing the body.
What health benefits does lovage offer?
Lovage has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects and helps promote urine excretion, which is beneficial for cleansing the urinary tract and preventing infections.
Its use in natural medicine includes relief for problems such as:
- urinary tract infections
- kidney stones
- gout and rheumatism
- ulcers
- sore throat
- tonsillitis
- digestive tract disorders
A 2016 study focused on the effect of lovage in cystinuria, which is a rare hereditary disease that causes the formation of kidney stones. The results showed that lovage may be effective in alleviating the symptoms of this condition. Nevertheless, further research is needed to confirm these effects.
Warnings and side effects
Side effects from using lovage are rare, but possible reactions include:
Dermatitis: Contact with lovage can cause skin irritation.
Induction of menstruation: Lovage contains substances that promote shedding of the uterine lining, which may trigger earlier menstruation.
Photosensitivity: The plant contains furocoumarins, which can increase sensitivity to UV radiation.
Before using lovage, it is advisable to consult a doctor, especially if you plan regular consumption. The recommended dose of dried lovage is usually 4 to 8 grams per day, ideally in the form of tea. If you prefer a tincture, 0.5 to 2 milliliters three times a day is recommended.
