Do you remember those various bizarre home remedies your grandmother used when you were still a small child?
If not, in our article today we’ll remind you of a few of them. Although these are folk remedies, they often work surprisingly better than modern medicines from the pharmacy.
1. Potato for bites from spiders or other insects
We admit it sounds strange, but according to the portal Nevyhazujte zbytky, potatoes for bites really work very well!
Take a potato, wash it and cut off a small slice with a knife. Then use medical tape to stick it onto the bitten area.
Change the potato slice for a fresh one every 12 hours. After a few days, if it’s a more serious bite, it should heal completely. For lighter ones it will be much sooner.
2. Garlic for toothaches
In 1740 the founder of the Methodist church John Wesley wrote a book of healing recipes.
In it he stated that inserting a clove of garlic into the ear helps relieve toothache. However, the clove must be whole and intact, since direct juice could irritate the ear and the skin.
Another option is to rub the cut clove directly on the inflamed tooth for 7 to 10 minutes. This reduces both pain and inflammation.
But be careful, at first rub for only a few seconds and when the garlic does not cause irritation, then extend the rubbing time.
3. Orange peel for a runny nose and colds
Many nasal sprays today are made with an orange scent. However, that’s not just because of the aroma.
According to the Mental Floss site, rolling the orange peel (or cutting off a piece with a knife) and then tucking it into the nose was common practice in the 18th century for a runny nose and colds.
4. Vodka for foot odor
It makes sense – alcohol kills the bacteria that create odor from sweat. Therefore alcohol should be able to remove foot odor when applied to them.
It is recommended to soak a piece of cloth in vodka and wipe your feet with it. If you don’t have vodka, you can use any other alcohol (over 40%), or rubbing alcohol.
5. Pencil for headaches
Some sources state that headaches are often caused by tension of the jaw muscles.
To relieve a headache, place a pencil between your teeth and let the chewing muscles relax. You’ll be surprised how quickly your headache will subside.
6. Yogurt for bad breath
Do you have bad breath in the morning after waking up? Then start eating yogurt.
How does it work? Good bacteria in yogurt can replace and displace the bad bacteria that are responsible for causing the unpleasant odor.
7. Licorice for calluses
Licorice can soften blisters and calluses.
Mix powdered licorice and 1/2 teaspoon of oil or cosmetic cream and apply this mixture to your calluses or blisters.
8. Olive oil for motion sickness (seasickness, nausea from rocking)
When you’re preparing for a longer trip by car or boat, you can use olive oil to help reduce motion sickness.
Simply put a teaspoon of oil in your mouth, swirl it for a while and then swallow.
How does it work? In motion sickness an excessive amount of saliva usually forms in the mouth. Olive oil contains tannins that help dry the mouth and also suppress nausea.
