When deciding on the baptism of children we encounter a difficult question: whom to choose as godparents? Do you know what duties godparents have?

Almost all denominations have godparents. They are people who are present at a child’s baptism and become members of the family, especially for their godchild.

They are called second parents, who should replace the biological ones if they are not nearby, so it’s necessary to choose responsible people.

Not those who come to visit only at Christmas or birthdays.

Godparents will become friends, helpers and mentors of your child, who will always be there, even when they grow up. The Church believes that godparents should raise the child in the faith, however this

their responsibility does not end.

These are 6 commitments to the child:

  1. Godparents should raise the child in the Christian faith (in case they are Christians) and should be a good example for him.
  2. Godparents will be role models for the child, so it’s very important to choose people whose lifestyle the child can emulate.
  3. Godparents should be present at all significant events in the child’s life.
  4. The godchild should maintain close relationships with the godparents, regardless of his relationship with the parents.
  5. Godparents should help the child with learning and development, take part in his life and provide support when needed.
  6. Godparents help parents cope with difficult situations, transitional periods or adversity in their child’s life.
