Freezing is an ideal way to preserve the freshness of food and avoid wasting it. However, did you know that for some types of food freezing is the easiest way to ruin them? We present to you 5 types of food that definitely have no place in the freezer.

Vegetables with high water content

You can freeze most vegetables without problems, without anything happening to them. Vegetables with a high water content, however, definitely do not belong in the freezer. After thawing they turn into a mush that tastes completely different from the original food. Cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, radishes, leafy greens or onions should be frozen only after cooking, never raw.

Dairy products

Although hard cheeses like Parmesan or Gouda withstand freezing without a change in texture, (especially if you grate them before placing them in the freezer) most dairy products do not tolerate temperatures below freezing well. While in the case of yogurts and milk the liquids separate after thawing, soft cheeses completely change their texture.

Some types of fruit

We buy many types of seasonal fruit in larger quantities and freeze them so we have them available whenever we want. Although most fruits tolerate low temperatures very well, keep fruits like apples, melons or citrus fruits as far away from the freezer as possible.

Eggs

It doesn’t matter in what state you plan to put them in the freezer, eggs are simply not suitable for freezing. If you put them in the freezer raw, the shell will crack and the contents will leak into the drawer. A boiled egg changes its texture in the freezer and after thawing is practically inedible. However, if you have no other option and need to freeze eggs, the only suitable option is to separate the yolks from the whites and store them separately in airtight containers suitable for the freezer.

Sauces

You can of course safely freeze larger amounts of svíčková (cream) sauce or tomato sauce, but flavoring sauces such as mustard, barbecue or mayonnaise definitely do not belong in the freezer. The thickeners that these products contain are very sensitive to low temperatures and change their structure quite a bit after thawing. So you might as well throw them straight in the bin.
