Cold weather is a time when respiratory illnesses spread more easily. However, there are herbs that can help relieve cough and fight lung infections. Natural treatment of coughs and respiratory illnesses has a long history, thanks to proven herbs that bring relief and support healing. Here are three of them:
1. Coltsfoot (Martilapu)
Coltsfoot, also known as Martilapu, is one of the first herbs to bloom in spring. It is known for its medicinal effects, especially on coughs and respiratory illnesses.
What is it good for?
Coltsfoot is effective in treating coughs and bronchitis. It soothes inflammation in the bronchi and suppresses irritating coughs. Its mucilaginous substances coat and protect inflamed mucous membranes, providing relief to patients.
How to use it?
Coltsfoot is often combined with other herbs to avoid overdosing. Here is a recipe for a tea blend:
Ingredients:
- Coltsfoot leaf: 30 g
- Iceland moss: 20 g
- Eucalyptus leaf: 12 g
- Chamomile flower: 12 g
- Anise seeds: 10 g
- Mullein flower: 8 g
- Thyme: 8 g
Mix the blend well and store in a closed container. To prepare the tea, add 1.5 tablespoons of the mixture to half a liter of hot water and let it steep for 15 minutes.
2. Mullein
This herb is known for its characteristic appearance – its leaves are hairy and the yellow flowers look like a torch. Mullein has long been used in traditional medicine as an effective remedy for cough.
What is it good for?
Mullein soothes irritated mucous membranes and helps treat dry cough. At the same time it supports the expectoration of phlegm, which speeds up the healing process.
How to use it?
Mullein is often used together with other herbs. The tea preparation is similar to that of coltsfoot.
Ingredients:
- Mullein flower: 20 g
- Thyme: 30 g
- Anise: 20 g
- Primrose root: 20 g

Plantain is an excellent remedy for suppressing cough. It acts against inflammation of the airways and helps dissolve phlegm, which makes expectoration easier. This tea is ideal for seniors and smokers who suffer from so-called old-age cough.
