Cancer is currently the No.1 cause of death in the world. It has already overtaken cardiovascular disease, which until now led the rankings.
It is estimated that about one third of tumors are caused by what we eat. With the right diet we can prevent or even cure this serious disease.
In this article we present a list of 16 foods whose consumption is associated with an increased risk of developing cancer.
1. Foods high in salt, pickled or smoked
You should avoid meats such as bacon, sausage and salami that are high in fat and salt.
Pickled foods are also excessively salted. For this reason their consumption increases the risk mainly of colon cancer and stomach cancer.
2. Diet foods
Diet foods, such as frozen or packaged foods labeled “diet” or “low-fat”, including sweetened sodas, contain artificial sweeteners.
The worst among them is aspartame, but saccharin or sucrose are equally dangerous.
Numerous studies have been conducted showing that aspartame causes several diseases, such as cancer, congenital developmental defects and heart problems.
3. Microwave popcorn
Many dangerous chemical substances are added to common microwave popcorn bags. The most significant of these is perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).
It can also be found in Teflon material. According to a recent study at the University of California, a link was found between it and female infertility.
4. Non-organic fruit
Fruit that is not organic is often contaminated with many dangerous substances.
Most commonly these are pesticides, atrazine, thiodicarb and organophosphates, as well as highly concentrated nitrogenous fertilizers.
Atrazine is banned in European countries, but it is still used here. It is sprayed on weeds, causing serious problems in people, particularly in their reproductive systems.
5. Packaged potato chips
This tasty treat contains high amounts of fats and calories, making it easy to gain weight.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that consuming just one small bag of potato chips per day causes a weight gain of up to 1 kg over the course of a year.
In addition to containing trans fats, chips can raise cholesterol in most people. Their excessive salt content, in turn, causes high blood pressure.
6. Alcohol
Alcohol consumption is the second most common cause of cancer, right after tobacco use.
While occasional and moderate alcohol consumption can be healthy and leads to a reduced risk of heart disease, excessive consumption causes heart failure, stroke and sudden death.
7. Canned tomatoes and tomato pastes
The lining of most cans is made using a chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA.
Tomatoes are particularly dangerous because of their high acidity, which causes BPA to leach more quickly into the tomatoes themselves.
8. Processed meat
All processed meat contains a number of chemical and preservative substances, such as sodium nitrate, which keeps meat tasty and looking fresh.
However, these substances are known carcinogens. Smoking meat is especially harmful because the meat can attract tar during the smoking process.
9. Farmed salmon
Farmed salmon are fed an unnatural diet and are contaminated with chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides and other known carcinogens.
They live in very cramped conditions. They are contaminated with 30 times more marine contaminants than wild salmon.
Farmed salmon are often fed chemicals intended to induce their characteristic red-pink coloring.
10. Artificial sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners are not only a problem in the above-mentioned diet drinks, but also when used on their own as sweeteners.
There is increasing scientific evidence that artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame) break down in the body into deadly toxins. One of the best known is diketopiperazine (DKP).
When it is processed in the stomach it is converted into other chemicals that can cause cancer, especially brain tumors.
11. GMO crops
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not carry out any testing procedures on GMO crops.
The only human study that has been published showed that these foreign genes are transferred into the DNA of bacteria in the digestive system.
12. Processed white flour
Today’s flour mills no longer wait for the natural bleaching of flour, but bleach it with a chemical called gaseous chlorine.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that gaseous chlorine is dangerously irritating. A high dose of this gas can be fatal.
13. Hydrogenated oils
All vegetable oils contain high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. Their excess can cause health problems, such as heart disease, various types of cancer, especially skin cancer.
You must have a balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the body.
Therefore try to consume enough omega-3 fatty acids either in foods (avocado, flaxseed and hemp oil) or in supplement form (the best are animal sources of omega-3 acids such as cod liver oil).
14. Red meat
Red meat is particularly dangerous, especially with regard to the risk of developing colon cancer.
A study conducted in the USA included nearly 150,000 people aged 50 to 74. It found that long-term consumption of red meat significantly increased cases of colon cancer.
15. Refined sugars
Cancer is nourished by all things sweet. This fact has been known for many years.
Nobel Prize laureate in medicine Otto Warburg discovered in 1931 that cancer tumors feed on sugar, which they need for their growth.
16. Soft drinks
Sugary soft drinks are full of empty calories that cause weight gain and contribute to the obesity epidemic.
Excessive consumption of these soft drinks causes sugar levels to spike, which leads to inflammation, insulin resistance and later even to cancer.
